Ambivalent About Syfy’s ‘The Ark’

THE ARK — (Photo by: SYFY)

I thought I’d share my initial thoughts about The Ark after having streamed the first 8 episodes.

Frustrated, is perhaps the single best word that describes how I feel. While the premise is neither new nor ground-breaking, that doesn’t mean it didn’t have the potential to be a gripping show. But so far, it isn’t. I’m still watching, hoping it will get better (or at least less clichéd), but that’s mostly because I know there are only going to be 12 episodes in season one. I can last for four more episodes.

Re-watching Star Wars – The Rise of Skywalker

The Rise of Skywalker

Yesterday we watched The Rise of Skywalker, the final movie (so far) in the Star Wars chronological timeline after The Last Jedi. It’s been an interesting experience watching all 11 movies in chronological order in a relatively short time frame. It’s allowed me to see and understand connections between characters and movies that I hadn’t before, and I highly recommend it.

This is not a review and it isn’t meant to rain on anybody’s opinion of this movie – it’s simply an attempt to articulate my own feelings about it. Your mileage may most definitely vary.

The last time I saw The Rise of Skywalker was when I saw it at the theater, but I honestly didn’t remember anything other than a couple of brief scenes. I do remember coming away from the movie being a bit baffled, but that’s about it. So the only thing I brought into the re-watch was the suspicion that the movie was hamstrung from the start simply because it followed the story disaster that was The Last Jedi. I’m willing to forgive a lot because of that.

Warning! Spoilers Below (if there can be such a thing as spoilers for a movie released in 2019).

Re-watching Star Wars – The Last Jedi

The Last Jedi

Yesterday we watched The Last Jedi, the next movie in the Star Wars chronological timeline after The Force Awakens. Of all of my Star Wars movie posts, this is the post I’ve most dreaded to write.

This is not a review and it isn’t meant to rain on anybody’s opinion of this movie – it’s simply an attempt to articulate my own feelings about it. Your mileage may most definitely vary.

I remember seeing The Last Jedi at the theater and coming away conflicted. I’ve watched it a few times since then and I’m still conflicted.

Warning! Spoilers Below (if there can be such a thing as spoilers for a movie released in 2017).

Re-watching Star Wars – The Force Awakens

The Force Awakens

Last night we watched The Force Awakens, the next movie in the Star Wars chronological timeline after Return of the Jedi.

This is not a review and it isn’t meant to rain on anybody’s opinion of this movie – it’s simply an attempt to articulate my own feelings about it. Your mileage may most definitely vary.

I went to see The Force Awakens at the theater with mixed emotions – hopeful that it would rekindle the spark of the Star Wars original trilogy, and fearful that it might fall even farther short of the mark than the prequel movies. I was thrilled to have my hope rewarded. I’ve watched The Force Awakens multiple times since then, and I’ve enjoyed it more each time. It really did re-awaken my love of Star Wars.

Warning! Spoilers Below (if there can be such a thing as spoilers for a movie released in 2015).

Re-watching Star Wars – Return of the Jedi

Return of the Jedi

Last night we watched Return of the Jedi, the next movie in the Star Wars chronological timeline after The Empire Strikes Back.

This is not a review and it isn’t meant to rain on anybody’s opinion of this movie – it’s simply an attempt to articulate my own feelings about it. Your mileage may most definitely vary.

I remember going to see Return of the Jedi when it was first released and being very satisfied with how the over-arcing saga ended (or so we thought at the time). It’s the only movie of the original trilogy that I didn’t see multiple times in the theater. While it still stands head and shoulders over the prequel movies, I think it’s the weakest overall of the original three movies.

Warning! Spoilers Below (if there can be such a thing as spoilers for a movie released in 1983).

Re-watching Star Wars – The Empire Strikes Back

The Empire Strikes Back

Last night we watched The Empire Strikes Back, the next movie in the Star Wars chronological timeline after the original Star Wars (aka A New Hope).

This is not a review and it isn’t meant to rain on anybody’s opinion of this movie – it’s simply an attempt to articulate my own feelings about it. Your mileage may most definitely vary.

I saw The Empire Strikes Back in the first week of its release in theaters in May 1980. I was living in a small town at the time and no one I knew there was a Star Wars fan, so I went to see it on my own and without being spoiled for its plot twist (also remember there was no internet at the time). I was so blown away by what I’d seen that I went back within a few days to watch it again.

Warning! Spoilers Below (if there can be such a thing as spoilers for a movie released in 1980).

Re-watching Star Wars – Star Wars

Star Wars

Last night we watched Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, the next movie in the Star Wars chronological timeline after Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

This is not a review and it isn’t meant to rain on anybody’s opinion of this movie – it’s simply an attempt to articulate my own feelings about it. Your mileage may most definitely vary.

I should mention that the version we watched last night is the original version. While our copy is the crappy transfer that was all Lucas would allow on DVD (which I believe you can no longer even get), I still prefer it to the so-called “improved” version (after Lucas tinkered with it). That means, not only did Han shoot first – Greedo never even managed to get a shot off.

I saw Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope when it was first released in theaters in 1977 as simply Star Wars. I know I went back and saw it at least two more times (possibly more – my recollection is a bit hazy past the first three times). I had been reading Science Fiction and Fantasy since I was in elementary school, and watching Star Wars was a real shock to my system – not only was it the closest I’d ever come to seeing those books come to life, but the character of Leia resonated strongly with me (I was born the same year as Carrie Fisher).

Warning! Spoilers Below (if there can be such a thing as spoilers for a movie released in 1977).

Re-watching Star Wars – Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

A couple of nights ago we watched Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the next movie in the Star Wars chronological timeline after Solo: A Star Wars Story.

This is not a review and it isn’t meant to rain on anybody’s opinion of this movie – it’s simply an attempt to articulate my own feelings about it. Your mileage may most definitely vary.

Rogue One was well-received when it was first released in 2016, and it seems to have held up well with both fans and critics. I remember going to see it at the theater and being blown away. I’ve only watched it a couple of times since, but that isn’t because I didn’t like it.

Warning! Spoilers Below (if there can be such a thing as spoilers for a movie released in 2016).
